Therefore, an audit should only be called if the benefits outweigh those costs. This happens in three circumstances:
The project management life cycle has a significant chance of complete failure without the audit.
The project has a significant chance of major and increasing delays or cost overruns without the audit.
The audit is required by law or regulation.
To the extent possible, the audit should be planned and scheduled so as to minimize interference with work, and to allow project work to resume at full operational rate as soon as possible.
